Getting ready to leave the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert.

Todd, a ranger who has been in the Netherlands, wanted us to help him make kroketten -- a delicious snack  from Holland. I hadn't made any for a number of decades but Todd did a great job getting the first part ready for us. They turned out great and Tammo, a student from Utrecht (the Netherlands) was invited as well and we all enjoyed a very tasty treat. If you want to know how to make these treats e-mail me and we will send you the recipe.

Gary and I showing off the end result.

Don't they look good??

Todd, Gary and I enjoying our kroketten and beer.

Tammo gets to eat some too. He thought they were great and he said he had never eaten any home-made ones before. He will enjoy more while he is here as Todd is going to make them every week, he said.

You will never believe what I did. I was walking down to our trailer when I saw a long gopher snake (about 5' long) out of the corner of my eye. I jumped and told the mailman who had just delivered our mail at the park post office. He picked up the snake and told me that the snake was harmless and would I want to touch it. No way, I said. But guess what? Before very long he had talked me into having the snake wrapped around my neck and around my arms. Snakes feel very cold and dry, but this one was not bad to hold onto.

Mailman with snake. Look at the size of it!!!!

Snake lady as Gary calls me now with the snake wrapped around my neck.

Today, July 1, they gave us a going away party. Lots of people showed up and made us feel very good.
We had cake, watermelon, and chips. The leftovers were brought by me to the other end of the park so the people there could have some too. We also got a really nice card and everybody wrote something in it. We will miss all the people we worked with and met but at the same time we are ready for moving on.

The cake was very small and the only knife to cut it with was very large. However, I did find a somewhat smaller knife which worked better.

Here we are with some of our co-workers.

Tomorrow we are going to have a barbecue at Todd's place. He has invited 50 people so far. It will be fun to see how many show up. If we have time we will write about that before we leave on Sunday for our next adventure.
